Area boarding facilities are reporting outbreaks of Canine Upper Respiratory Disease. This is typically caused by a combination of respiratory viruses and bacteria but does include the possibility of Kennel Cough and Canine Influenza.

We recommend limiting unnecessary contact with dogs in the neighborhood if at all possible during the upcoming weeks.

Preventative Care for Dogs

The proactive approach to veterinary care

Preventive care is your dog’s first line of defense. Routine doctor exams help prevent, diagnose and treat illness in its early stages, often before any noticeable symptoms begin. The earlier treatment starts, the more effective it is, keeping your pet from unnecessary pain and suffering.

Preventive Measures

Veterinary Exams: Our comprehensive exams evaluate the heart and lungs, eyes and ears, skin and coat, gastrointestinal and urinary health as well as muscle strength and joint function.

Vaccinations: Each individual pet is evaluated with a risk assessment to determine which vaccines are necessary to protect them according to their life style without exposing them to unnecessary vaccines. Vaccine titers are available and encouraged for those wishing to avoid immune stimulation.

Dental Care: Oral health is extremely important for maintaining the day to day health of your pet. While daily brushing is always the best it is difficult to maintain with our busy schedules and at times our 4 legged friends cooperation. Routine dental cleanings and evaluations help to maintain healthy teeth and a strong jaw. We evaluate our patients with full dental x-rays and when extractions are needed each patient receives local anesthetics as well as appropriate pain management.

Parasite Control: Nearly all new puppies and kittens arrive with intestinal parasites on board in addition to those that exist in our environment and in the wildlife population living in our area. Routine fecal examinations are vital to identifying and maintaining your pet’s gastrointestinal health and immune system as well as to prevent parasite transmission to people. We will also discuss with you the most current and safe methods for preventing fleas, ticks and heartworms.

Skin and Coat Care: Daily brushing of your pet not only decreases the amount of hair in your home, it stimulates their nerve system and sense of well-being. For some allergies and infections become a problem and we can help discover ways to enhance and manage a healthy skin and coat.

Proper Nutrition: We review the diet of every pet and discuss with you our recommendations of the types of food and supplements that will provide optimum nutrition and health for your pet.

Behavioral Evaluation: Everyone wants their pet to be content, calm and happy… however some of our beloved pets struggle with this day in and day out. Abnormal behavior expresses a need, the trick is to identifying that need so that it can be met and you and your pet may enjoy an enriched human animal bond.

Exercise: All animals need appropriate mental and physical exercise to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle. Let us assist you with ideas and a plan!
